There are 5 keys to container
success.
1. Add at least a 1-inch layer
of gravel or lightweight, non-dissolving foam packing peanuts
to the bottom of a pot before adding soil.
2.Choose
quality potting soil that is light, sandy, and drains
quickly.
It should not contain too much woody matter, such as peat
moss.
3.Never
prune roots to fit the pot—get a bigger pot.
4.Leave
at least 1 inch of space between the rim of the pot and the
top of the soil. The bigger the pot, the more space you may
need to leave. The "freeboard" allows you to fill
the pot with water without worrying about overflowing it.
5.After
planting, add mulch, or some other material to the top of
the soil to retain moisture.
